Airtel to Block Other Devices from Accessing their BIS Plan starting December 3rd

Airtel Nigeria’s sending SMSes to its customers letting them know that starting from the 3rd of December, (2013), they would be blocking non-BlackBerry access to their BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS).

Their BIS plans have been a source of cheap internet to android and iOs users for a while now in these parts. While we are on the matter, that’s a great place to start looking for your next plan, if you have depended on Airtel’s BIS for your other devices.

The new move, which is probably due to either revenue leakage or degraded quality of service for the actual BIS subscribers will leave many non-BlackBerry users in these parts unamused.

If its any consolation, you can get all you can from their BBM plans HERE for a decent price from your android or iOs device.

ASUU Dares Federal Government as Federal Government Threatens to Sack Off Lecturers

Students of government-owned universities might have just been condemned to extended stay out of school as the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, over non-implementation of the 2009 agreement seem set to continue owing to the government’s new tactic of threat.

The Federal Government had through the Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike vowed to sack any lecturer who fails to return to class within seven days, and had directed vice-chancellors of federal universities that are currently on strike to immediately re-open for academic and allied activities.

Briefing journalists in Abuja, yesterday, Wike said it was rather unfortunate that after a 13-hour meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja on November 4, 2013, the union came up with new conditions before they could call off the strike.

According to him, it was obvious that the new conditions put forward by ASUU were not in the interest of the nation, one of which was that President Jonathan should facilitate endorsement of resolutions reached with him, which must be signed by a high ranking government official, preferably the Attorney-General of the Federation but not a permanent secretary. ASUU said their representative as well as the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Abdulwahid Omar, would stand as witnesses.

The striking lecturers also wanted the N200 billion agreed upon as 2013 revitalisation fund for public universities to be lodged with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and disbursed to the benefiting universities. They also want the government to pay their salary arrears before resuming academic activities.

Wike told newsmen, yesterday that “All Vice-chancellors of Federal Universities that are on strike should immediately reopen for academic and allied activities as directed by their Pro-Chancellors. Vice-Chancellors should ensure that staff who resume for work are provided with the enabling environment for academic and allied activities.

“Any academic staff who fails to resume on or before December 4, 2013, automatically ceases to be staff of the institution and vice-chancellors are also directed to advertise vacancies (internal and external) in their institutions”.

Wike also accused ASUU of sabotaging the effort of government in addressing the issues especially after having a 13-hour meeting with President Jonathan where all issues were resolved and firm commitments were made.

He said: “On November 4, 2013, in a 13 hour meeting, President Goodluck Jonathan met with the ASUU executive, the labour union leaders from Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, where all issues were resolved and firm commitments made to address the lingering issues.

“It is noteworthy that Mr. President’s gesture was more than sufficient to guarantee the commitment of Government to address all issues as resolved at the meeting with Mr. President.

“At the end of the meeting with Mr. President, the ASUU executive promised to meet with its National Executive Committee to present the resolutions reached and report back by Friday November 8, 2013.

“As a responsible government we cannot allow continuous closure of our public universities for this length of time (five months), as this poses danger to the education system, the future of our youths and national development”.

The minister therefore directed NUC to ensure all the Federal Government universities comply with the directives saying, “the National Universities Commission, NUC, is hereby directed to monitor the compliance of these directives by various institutions”.

Asked whether the directive by the Federal Government to vice chancellors to reopen was not against labour laws, Wike said if there were any grievances they should seek redress in the law court.

In its reaction, ASUU however said threat by the Federal Government to sack university lecturers would only worsen the situation and “another long path to make the strike linger more than necessary.”

ASUU stated the threat has now made it evident that the Federal Government had no intention of implementing any resolutions it reached with the union.

The union’s treasurer, Dr. Ademola Aremu, who spoke on behalf of the union said the Federal Government would only succeed in wasting the time of Nigerians and youths in the country if it failed to perfect the resolutions.

ASUU said it was trying to ensure the government was truly committed to the resolutions reached as it had reneged on the promises it made with ASUP, resident doctors, and health workers.

The union described the threat as an insult to the sense and sensibilities of Nigerians who were waiting on the Federal Government for positive reaction.

“with the latest action, the Federal Government has shown that they are not committed to all they have been saying.

“We are saying that since we agreed at the meeting that the sum of N200 billion is for 2012 and 2013 revitalisation, the Federal Government should deposit same in the Central Bank of Nigeria. We are already in November and December is around the corner.

“If they don’t do that now, when do they want to do it?. We are saying the non-victimisation clause should be included as agreed while the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement should be included as agreed with the President.

“It is a pity if the Federal Government is not willing to perfect the resolutions reached withunion. This is why we find it difficult to hold our leaders by their words. How can someonebe threatening to sack lecturers when universities are already short-staffed by almost 60,000.

“We are not in military era. The military tried it and failed. This one will fail again. They can re-open the schools. ASUU did not shut downthe universities. It was the school management that ordered the students to go back home.”

Reacting to the directive in a telephone chat with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, Chairman, University of Lagos branch of ASUU, Dr Oghenekaro Ogbinaka, said that the development was strange and laughable.

“Our reaction is simple. Let us just wait for theseven days to come around,” he said.

“What government has just done shows that they were not committed in the offer they made with the union that had the Trade Union Congress President and the Minister of Labour in attendance. We are not going to fall to that blackmail. Now, which one is better, government acceding to our demands or issuing out threats?

“Honestly, this whole thing ought to have been easily resolved, given the approach taken by President (Goodluck) Jonathan, but it is like we want to be taken for granted after all and it is unfair,” he said.

Police Arrests a 45 year old man for Allegedly R*ping a 75 year old woman

Police in Ekiti have arrested a 45 year old man identified as Lawrence Adedapo, for allegedly forcibly having carnal knowledge of a 75-year-old woman, Grace Asaolu, at Ogbese Camp, Ise-Ekiti in Ise-Orun Local Government Area of Ekiti State.

Adedapo, a farmer, was said to have invited the old woman to his house on November 7 this year under the pretext that he brought some plantain from his farm for sale.

The accused was said to have taken advantage of the septuagenarian’s fragile nature, overpowering her before having carnal knowledge of her.

Narrating her ordeal, Mrs Asaolu said;
“Lawrence Adedapo is my neighbour. He invited me to come and collect plantain but instead he pushed me on his children’s bed and forcefully had carnal knowledge of me. I later rushed to the police station to report the matter.”

When he was interrogated by the police, the suspect confirmed that he had carnal knowledge of the woman but however denied forcing her, claiming that she was his mistress.

“I knew her long time ago. I knew her as a widow from Moba Local Government Area of the state. We have known each other for the past 35years and I have been dating her for long.

“The last time I had s*x with her was in April during Easter before meeting her again on November 7. That was the second time we met this year. I did not force her into it and I had her consent before doing it”.

Asked why she reported the matter to the police, Adedapo said: “I promised to give her N2,000 which she asked for before we did it. But after the s*x I was able to give her N1,000 only. That could be the reason why she alleged that I r*ped her. I later found out that she was bleeding as a result of the s*x.

“I did not even release because I used my children’s room, so I had to rush.”

Confirming the incident, Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Victor Babayemi, ASP, insisted that the investigation carried out by the police revealed that the old woman was actually r*ped by the suspect.

“In the course of investigation, facts emerged that the suspect knew the victim to be of old age, 75, and in menopause.

“She could not have been bleeding without tampering with her organ. Medical report shows that there was a violent s*xual assault on her; she was also said to be distressed with her private part smeared with fresh blood.

“It shows that he invited the woman with criminal intent to have intercourse with her,” Babayemi said.

Kim Kardashian Is The Most Beautiful Woman Of All Time - Kanye West

In a radio interview with Angie Martinez yesterday, Kanye said he isn’t worried about how his relationship with Kim K is affecting his career, saying she’s so beautiful it doesn't matter if she is uncool.

‘I don’t give a f*** what type of jacket she got on. Ladies and gentlemen y’all acting like this ain’t the most beautiful woman of all time! Arguably of human existence. The top ten of human existence.’

Kanye also said dating Kim has taught him that life was about more than ‘whats cool or not cool’.

‘I felt like our love story is a love story for the ages. I felt like when we first got together it’s a Romeo And Juliet kind of thing. Like she’s a reality star and I’m a rapper and people talking about how our brands connect and it doesn’t fit. And I’m just so tired of brands… It’s not about branding at a certain point. I loved her from the first day I saw her which I said on Bound.’

He then admitted he allowed the Keeping Up With Kardashian cameras to capture his elaborate marriage proposal to Kim last month.

‘When we got engaged I made sure the show was there because I felt like that would make her happy. Regardless of how it was shot I felt like this was a moment she would want to have.’

Even if it affects your career? Jazzman dey london?! E b like say dey don jazz am

Unilag Fraction: ASUU Plans to End Strike Next Year

The Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities (ASUU) is planning to end the ongoing five-month strike mid-January next year, a faction of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter alleged on Monday.

The faction, however, insisted that the closure of Nigerian universities by the lecturers must end this week.

Leader of the faction, Dr Adeyemi Daramola, a lecturer in the Department of English, Faculty of Arts accused the body of assuming oracular posture on the strike.

According to him, “The position of ASUU has not demonstrated original function of its rules which says “reports on agreement from the Union universities’ branches should be collated and announced”.

“ASUU-NEC has assumed an oracular posture by its very poor communication to members, government and the Nigerian society.

"The target of ASUU is to call off the strike by mid-January of 2014 which is no longer a rumour in the domain of its members. We have postponed other meetings of this pressure version of UNILAG

“If necessary, we shall take all legitimate steps to ensure that normalcy is restored to all the Nigerian universities as soon as possible, as the group would not accept the rumour of a resumption date fixed for January, 2014. About two universities’ academic calendar have been wasted on strike, including lecturers’ four months salaries lost."

Another leader of the anti-strike faction, Dr Michael Ogbeide of the History Department told the Nigerian Tribune on phone that “the ASUU strike had become nonsense and must be stopped. A lot of our members also believe so but are afraid to speak out.”

He assured that the faction would keep pressurising the leadership until the strike is called off.

When asked the next line of action if UNILAG ASUU leadership did not accede to the faction’s request, he said “as an historian, in war, you don't divulge your strategy before hand.”

Early on Monday morning, there were rumours that the Unilag ASUU had decided to withdraw from the strike, but this was debunked by some members of the union, though it was confirmed that there was a split among the members, with Daramola’s faction reportedly kicking against the institution’s continued participation in the strike.

According to a source who pleaded anonymity, the congress actually turned out disorganised and divided, as some members, during the meeting began to protest, demanding UNILAG’s withdrawal from the strike.

It was learnt that after the meeting became rowdy, the two factions later held separate meetings, with both reportedly resolving to maintain their postures.

The main body insisted that the strike would be on until grey areas are sorted out.

BlackBerry says Goodbye to its COO, CMO and CFO

After the acquisition plans fell through, BlackBerry changed strategies and its CEO. The changes in the company go deeper than just swapping the leader though – it was announced today that the COO, CMO and CFO are being replaced.

Kristian Tear, the outgoing Chief Operating Officer, and Frank Boulben, Chief Marketing Officer, are leaving and their replacements are yet to be announced.

Here's what new CEO and Executive Chair John Chen had to say about the two:

"I thank Kristian and Frank for their efforts on behalf of BlackBerry. I look forward to working more directly with the talented teams of engineers, and the sales and marketing teams around the world to facilitate the BlackBerry turn-around and to drive innovation."

The Chief Financial Officer, Brian Bidulka, is also on his way out. His replacement has already been announced, it's James Yersh who has been with BlackBerry since 2008, serving various roles such as SVP, Controller and Head of Compliance. Bidulka will remain in an advisory role until the end of the fiscal year.

Chen thanked Bidulka and looks forward to working Yersh.

"I look forward to working with James and his Finance team as we move forward, execute on our plans and deliver long-term value for our shareholders."

One final bit of leadership shakeup - Roger Martin, a board member since 2007, has resigned.

HTC One GPE Getting Android 4.4 KitKat

The Android 4.4 KitKat update for the HTC One Google Play Edition has been ready for a little over a week and is finally starting its rollout. The update should be available over the air, but you can also download it from here:

Android 4.3 JWR66Y to Android 4.4 KitKat KRT16S for HTC One Google Play Edition

The update weighs in at 305MB. It brings the new ART runtime, which Google is vetting to replace Dalvik. Users have been reporting noticeable speed increases and reduction in lag, but ART still has some way to go as certain apps crash under it.

Anyway, HTC just released the source codes for the stock and framework components of the HTC One GPe.

Samsung did the same for the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition and while there's no official announcement that the 4.4 KitKat update is ready, it can't be long now. This is also good news for the modding community, which is hard at work to port Android 4.4.
