Here are the New Must Have Gadgets, Smartphones are Last Year

Are you still euphoric about your new smartphone or tablet in 2015? Then there is a huge chance that you missed the train. A couple of months ago, I wrote about how smartphones had gotten boring, and while the newest set of flagship devices (to be specific, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus and the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge) tickle my fancy a bit, we aren’t back to the times when we were up all night literally waiting for one leak or the other about a new device or a new feature. We are also seeing less and less differentiators across OEMs and platforms as the days pass.

If you are one of those “showy” people that like to make statements with the kind of tech you’re carrying, smartphones and tablets might be out the door for you. However, if you are looking for something else to make statements with, these are the new must haves that are guaranteed to earn you some stripes in that department and more importantly, they are actually useful:

Smartwatch

Whether you like to admit it or not, smartwatches are definitely not going anywhere soon. I have always been excited at the prospects of smartwatches, maybe not for the same reasons as everyone else, but from the get go, they tickled my fancy.

I wouldn’t say the current range of smartwatches available tick all the boxes, still, having had one strapped to my wrist for a few months, I can say without a doubt that they are more useful than gimmick. On the few occasions when I take a break from wearing one, I keep expecting my regular watch to buzz with one notification or the other, or tell me how much of my fitness goals I’ve achieved or maybe even show me directions while driving, without necessarily having to take my eyes of the road.

I still have some misgivings about smartwatches as they are today, (I should write a review soon), but I’ll be the first to admit that they are a lot better than I expected…a lot cooler too!

Wireless audio dock

This one had been right under my nose for a while, I have been rocking a Bose Soundlink Bluetooth Speaker III, but it wasn’t till I was trying out Ad’s JB soundbar speaker that it occurred to me how mainstream they had become. Let’s face it; while devices like the BlackBerry Passport and the HTC One have decent sound outputs, they are still a far cry from the kind of quality, that’s good enough to “turn up” to. Then consider also that laptops and tablets which have somehow become the de facto means of consuming videos also aren’t packing so much in the type of “oomph” in the volume department to take your entertainment to the next level. Wireless speakers are in, because they are portable, mostly offer great quality sound and solve the problem of continuing the playlist that’s playing in the car, inside your house…saving you all that time you spend sitting in the parked car waiting for a not-so-cool song to play before getting out.

Did I mention that most of them are rechargeable? Take that NEPA/PHCN/DISCO.

Health/fitness tracker

On your daily commute to work, I am pretty sure you have noticed the number of people taking walks or running, with no one hot on their heels. Fitness is now such a huge deal in these parts that there is a startup built around fitness now. If smartwatches aren’t your thing (and even if they are), a fitness tracker might be something that tickles your fancy. After all, what’s the point of all the “fitfaming” if you don’t have your stats and data to make noise about track your progress? Fitness trackers may not look as cool or offer the functionality of smartwatches, but they are more accurate at what they do. Plus having to explain the concept of a running band, for example makes for a great conversation starter.

Drones

Growing up, some of us got to play with remote control planes/choppers which were loads of fun, even though in retrospect, most of them had really wonky controls and weren’t intuitive. For the rest of us who weren’t ajebutter, at the very least, we got to play with paper planes and kites. The need to control something in flight has always been a strong desire for most.

With drones now commercially available and cheap ones in particular being churned out of China on the daily, that desire is one that can finally be fed. What’s cooler, they aren’t just toys any more. With cameras, smooth controls and the ability to hover in the same spot, their use now extends way beyond their value as toys.

Kindle

Not a lot of people like reading, but everyone likes someone who is well read (asides the I-Too-Knows), so reading is definitely a “new” cool. In many regards, these days, meeting someone who reads extensively is almost like meeting a real-life ninja – we know they exist, and they’ll have cool tricks to show us, but don’t come across them very often.

You know what’s not so cool though? A stack of paperbacks (well, except they are in a shelve as part of the decor). E-Ink readers and Kindles in particular are functional and really cool to look at. They serve that cool, serious, studious look without looking like you’re from a ’80s TV show.

Asides smartphones and tablets, these are other things you should be checking out. We will have a bunch of reviews in some of those categories up shortly, before then though, did we miss any? Let us know!

There is a Game in your Chrome Browser

Google is one of the most fun companies in the world in my books. From doodles to Easter eggs on YouTube, there is always some small nuggets to be found here and there as you browse through their ecosystem.

I just discovered this about two weeks ago, or more correctly, a 12-year old, pointed it out to me. (I know, my last here is terrible right?)

I had always wondered why there was a dinosaur in Chrome whenever a page failed to load. Turns out that by tapping any of the direction keys on your keyboard, it becomes a mini platform game (think a very basic version of Temple Run in 2-D). Great for killing time while your internet catches its breath.

Hopefully, I haven’t just unleashed a Zuma replacement in several Civil Service offices across the country. I know you are off running to your computer to try it out, but before you do, are there any other similar nuggets I have missed? Please share in the comments.

Twitter Now Let’s You Retweet With Comments

One of the age-long issues with Twitter has been the how “Retweets” (RTs) are handled. Many had complained when the ability to Retweet while appending comments was taken away from the native app about a year ago, and the sentiment hasn’t changed much with each new iteration of the Retweet function.

The newest update from twitter across platforms brings yet another change from how the Retweet function is handled. The newest update, now replaces the quote which before now added “” to an old tweet and let you append your comments, to a new system that opens the tweet as a link and relies on Twitter’s card feature to embed the tweet in your timeline. The result is that you now have access to your full 140 characters when quoting a tweet.

The downside to this new change is that for those using third-party apps – especially those without the twitter card functionality – will only get links which they have to click on and open in a browser.

The feature has rolled out for all the platforms right now.

If and when you do check it out, let us know what you think about it.

MTN Said To Start Purchase of Nigeria Wireless Operator Visafone

Word on the street is that MTN Group has commenced the process of acquiring Visafone Communications Limited. While details are sketchy at the moment, MTN is apparently buying it as an expansion move in a market it already dominates. Visafone currently has just about 2.2 million subscribers against MTN’s 55 million, so it’s fair to assume that the growth in this case is not subscribers but most likely technology.

If the move goes through, it won’t be the first company MTN would be acquiring for its tech. In 2007, just around time Visafone was setting up, MTN acquired VGC Communications, a telecommunications provider licensed to provide cabling and radio telephone services nationwide. The company had laid an extensive fibre optic cable network around VGC and took care of most of the telephony needs there at the time. The same company is today behind MTN’s wimax service – Hynet among other things.

The acquisition may also be related to a license that Visafone has that MTN might need, however, as at the time of writing this, I am clueless as to which one it could be. In any case, it will be interesting to see what becomes of the acquisition if it goes through. And also what becomes of their 10 terabyte plan.

Tech: Google set to unveil new tablet

Google is working on a new tablet that will go on sale shortly, and will be able to take 3D photos, The PUNCH learnt on Monday.

According to sources, a small run of just 4,000 devices is planned.

It was gathered that a prototype smartphone had been given out to 200 developers to try out, and the technology is said to make use of infrared sensors to measure depth of surroundings.

“Taking 3D images is however itself not anew technology, and any camera can do it, if the correct software is later used to combine two photos taking an inch or so to one side of each other,” a statement from Google read.

It also reads, “The key significance of the Google product though is that it is said to embed the 3D depth data into the image, which then lets other software manipulate it into 3D output. While that could be for photographs, it could also be for mapping and location aware services.

“In gaming such technologies, it could also be used in Augmented Reality services.”

A small note on a Google projects page suggests, “Project Tango is an attempt to create a mobile device unlike any other,” adding that it could be “a mobile device that shares our sense of space and movement, that understands and perceives the world the same way we do.”

According to the Wall Street Journal, the 3D tablet will be shown off at Google’s annual developers’ conference at the end of June.

BBM 2.0 Update brings BBM Voice and Channels to Android and iOS

BBM’s next major update for android and iOS, which we exclusively told you about a few weeks ago, is now available for download for both platforms. Like we mentioned before, the update brings with it BBM Channels, BBM Voice, local sharing with Glympse, Dropbox integration and much more.

If you haven’t gotten a push notification yet, you can hit Google Play and the Apple App store to get the new update.

When you do, do check out Jeffbankstegrity Blog BBM channel: C004D3AC4 for cool stuff and occasionally chat with us directly or scan the QR code below or just search “Jeffbankstegrity Blog”.

Here’s the press release about the update from BlackBerry:

BBM Voice and BBM Channels Now Available for Android and iPhone Customers

New features also include simple file and photo sharing, location sharing, over 100 new emoticons and Dropbox integration for iPhone, Android and BlackBerry Smartphones

WATERLOO, ONTARIO–(Marketwired – February 13, 2014) – A new version of BBM™ is about for Android™, iPhone and BlackBerry® (NASDAQ: BBRY) (TSX: BB) customers, giving them lots of exciting new features. Android and iPhone customers will now be able to make free voice calls to BBM contacts over a Wi-Fi® or data connection with BBM Voice(i), as well as access BBM Channels. In addition, BBM customers on Android, iPhone and BlackBerry(ii) smartphones will have more to chat about with fast one-click sharing of photos, documents, voice notes and more. BBM customers will also be able to share their live location for a specified amount of time with other BBM contacts by using location sharing, powered by Glympse, and will have 100 new emoticons available to help them say what’s on their mind.

“BBM continues to deliver new functionality as a premier messaging platform that provides a simple and effective way to stay connected. Today’s announcement gives Android and iPhone customers the rich experience of BBM Voice and BBM Channels – two great ways to connect with friends, family and colleagues, to build out communities around shared interests, and to follow your favourite people and brands,” said John Sims, President, Global Enterprise Solutions at BlackBerry. “BBM continues to quickly evolve as a social mobile platform for consumers as well as for business customers through innovative features that give you great new ways to connect and share with each other.”

BBM Channels
BBM Channels lets customers chat with other BBM users about topics that interest them. Customers can join channels about a range of topics from products, hobbies and sports to entertainment, fashion, cars and more. Channels can be created by brands, businesses and BBM customers alike and are a great way to communicate directly and immediately with people who share common interests in the broader BBM community.

By posting to their channel, channel owners immediately reach their subscribers with a message that can spark discussions. “Scheduled chat hours” allow BBM customers to have live chats with the channel owner – a great way to engage directly with their favorite channels one on one.

BBM Channels maintains the BBM core values of immediacy, privacy and control. Because BBM Channels live right inside BBM, BBM customers get notified the moment one of the channels they follow has a new post, or when someone responds to their comments.

With BBM Channels, customers can engage with brands or other customers without having to add them to their contact lists, thereby maintaining a high level of privacy. With BBM Channels, customers have the discretion to opt in only to channel brands that are relevant to them and always have control over the channels they subscribe to, while channel owners have control over how subscribers interact with their channel.

For brands and businesses, BBM Channels provides a new way to interact and connect with a highly engaged and targeted mobile audience. There are thousands of brands already using BBM Channels to engage with their customers. More on BBM Channels:
*.Open, yet private. Channel owners control the conversation on their channels. Channel owners can choose to: allow subscribers to comment on posts freely or to approve them first; let subscribers chat with them directly anytime, or set chat hours; they can interact with subscribers without ever giving out personal details, or adding them as a personal BBM Contact. And with private channels, channel owners can keep in touch with closer circles on an invite-only basis.

*.Channel reporting. Each channel has its own performance dashboard built right in. Channel owners can see stats on how subscribers are engaging with their channel, how many people have viewed each post and how the subscriber base is growing.

*.It’s fast and easy. Start a channel right from a BlackBerry, iPhone or Android smartphone. It only takes a few minutes to set up a BBM Channel and once it is set up, posting to it is as simple as choosing a photo and adding a short message.

Location Sharing
With location sharing powered by Glympse, customers can now share their real-time location with one or several BBM contacts for a specified amount of time – perfect for when people are running late, out with friends and more. BBM puts control in the customers’ hands, allowing them to specify how long they want to share their location for, by setting a timer. When the timer runs out the customers’ location becomes private again.

Dropbox Support
Built-in support for Dropbox™ makes it easy to send large files like presentations and videos. With Dropbox built in to BBM, you can send a file from your personal cloud directly to a BBM contact. On the receiving end, you can save the file directly to your smartphone or add it to your Dropbox account.

Emoticons
BBM customers have been asking for more emoticons, and now more than 100 new emoticons have been added to help you express yourself. Many of the new emoticons came from ideas submitted by customers!

BBM continues to connect friends, family and colleagues across a myriad of mobile networks, as the standard for mobile instant messaging with a fast, reliable, and engaging experience that puts control of privacy and personal information back in the customers’ hands.

Lenovo Buys Motorola For $2.91 Billion

The rumour of Lenovo wanting to buy Motorola was confirmed few hours ago and the deal finally went through.

Lenovo which is a struggling Chinese computer company was making a bid to buy Motorola from Google few days back when the rumoured leaked. However, at the end of close of business the day before yesterday, the company was able to successfully buy the handset unit of Motorola which also comes with portfolio of patents.

Lenovo paid Google $2.91 billion to acquire Motorola according to the info on Google's website which is really far away from what Google herself paid to acquire Motorola few years back ($12 billion).

Lenovo will pay cold cash to Google upfront, which equates to $660 million, along with $750 million in stock, while the rest of the $1.5 billion will be paid out in the coming three years.

This would definitely suggest a kind of loss by Google in this regard, however, Google had been experiencing difficulties in turning the Motorola handset unit into some great in terms of profit and therefore selling Motorola to Lenovo is more like removing a pain-in-the-ass for the company even though Moto X and Moto G were very successful devices that are highly placed in the smartphone market.

Now, phones like Moto X and Moto G among others are now owned by Lenovo and the sales and profit made from them henceforth would go to Lenovo.

It is believed by some that the relationship between Samsung and Google could be the driving force in selling Motorola to Lenovo at such throwaway price.

Whether this is true or not remains to be seen however, what is done is already done.

We now have to look at what Lenovo would do with Motorola and how it will set the Chinese company in a great position.

Today’s consumers are getting more interested in smartphones and Nigeria is not left out of the smartphone revolution. Right now in Nigeria, Tecno Mobile is winning over the smartphone market as they are taking over the mobile phone market in Nigeria with their new range of Tecno Android smartphones.

Building its smartphones on the tested and trusted Android platform and keeping prices low has added to the popularity of Tecno Androids in Nigeria and across Africa. If you are on a very tight budget looking to enjoy mobile technologies that until now has been exclusive to the middle class and the rich, you can now get yourself one of the latest Tecno Android phones and feel among. Now that some bad guys are aware that Nigeria is one of the top markets for Tecno products, they have started scamming some consumers by selling fake Tecno Androids to them. What to Expect from BBM in 2014

Today I want to give you a first look at some of the great new features we have up next for BBM. As a leader of the BBM product management group, I wanted to share this with you first hand, so, let’s dive in.

We haven’t slowed down since launching BBM for iPhone and Android in October and BBM Channels for BlackBerry 10 and BBOS in November. We’ve been working on some new ways to make it faster and easier to share with your BBM contacts. Whether it’s talking with BBM Voice, connecting over a BBM Channel, sending a quick photo, or even sharing your location, there’s more to BBM than just chatting. Here’s what’s up next from BBM:

1. BBM Voice for iPhone and android or as I like to say, free voice calls to any BBM contact anywhere in the world! Just another way that BBM helps to bring you together with people when you can’t be there in person – without having to pay long distance charges.

2. BBM Channels for iPhone and Android BBM Channels are a great way to join conversations happening with the BBM community beyond your contact list. By creating your own channel you can start conversations sparked by your thoughts, ideas and passions. Subscribing to a BBM channel lets you join conversations with others who share your interests. Already there are tons of great channels from Tim Hortons (C00121F5C) to Mercedes-Benz (C0009C84D) to the Toronto Raptors (C000171E7), and my personal favourite, Through my Lens (C00019476). And more are coming online every week. I find BBM Channels is a great way to make new Contacts as well.

3. Faster and easier sharing – from photos to voice notes, your location and more BBM chats happen fast – so fast it’s like you’re there in the same room. Now you can share just about anything with that same speed. Share photos in a snap, send a voice note with just one touch and more. And get this, you can even share your location, live, for a limited time with any contact you choose. When the timer runs out your location is private again. Perfect for when you’re meeting up with friends, stuck in traffic or lost at a concert. (Not that that’s ever happened to me ☺.)

4. Lots of new emoticons speaking of emoticons, ask and ye shall receive. We’ve got loads of new emoticons to help you make your point. 100 new emoticons in all! This includes a bunch that came from you, our fans. We can’t wait for you to meet all our new emoticons from ROTFL, Epic Fail, Face palm, a serious hug and yes, even a smiley-poo.

We’re beta testing these features now for release on Android, iPhone and BlackBerry 10 in the next couple of months so stay sharp, they’ll be here before you know it. For a closer look at these features in action check out this video:
