BlackBerry Unveils BlackBerry Z3 and Q20

BlackBerry has announced a new duo of smartphones at the MWC 2014 - the BlackBerry Z3 and the BlackBerry Q20.

The BlackBerry Z3 is a full-touch smartphone with a 5" display and runs BlackBerry OS 10.2.1. BlackBerry CEO John Chen says that this is the first phone to come up with the strategic partnership with Foxconn.

Sadly, that's all we know on the phone's hardware so far since BlackBerry hasn't unveiled any more specs.

Update: specifications of the Z3 came in and the 5" display boasts a qHD resolution and is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 chipset and 1.5GB of RAM. Internal storage is 8GB, but there's no information if there's a microSD card slot available.

At the back, there's a 5MP camera, while at the front there's a 1.1MP one. Music lovers would also like the fact that the Z3 features an FM Radio, too.The phone will hit Indonesia in April and will cost less than $200 off contract.

As for the BlackBerry Q20, the company has gone back to its roots and the phone features a physical QWERTY keyboard and a trackpad. It seems, the BlackBerry wants to attract some of its core fans back and offers them a phone they'll be productive with.

Here’s a quote from John Chen, Executive Chairman and CEO at BlackBerry regarding the Q20.

"In my first 90 days on the job, I consistently heard from our ardent BlackBerry customers that the hard buttons and trackpad are an essential part of the BlackBerry QWERTY experience, that made their BlackBerry smartphone their go-to productivity tool. I want these customers to know that we heard them, and this new smartphone will be for them. Today, we’re delighted to announce the new BlackBerry Q20 smartphone, which is designed to give you the distinct experience that every BlackBerry QWERTY loyalist and high-productivity business customer absolutely loves. With the BlackBerry Q20 smartphone, you’ll get the familiar hard buttons and trackpad that you want, along with the best email service, the best keyboard experience and the best battery life possible."

The Menu, Back, Send and End buttons and the trackpad will be made an integral part of the device and user interface and in conjunction with the 3.5" display, BlackBerry says the phone will offer the best email experience on the market. The company also states that the Q20 will be made of premium materials, which will result in reliability and durability, but doesn't specify which ones.

We wish BlackBerry had disclosed more details, but that's not the case. We'll keep you posted for any new information that comes up. Hopefully BlackBerry will shed more light on the specs soon enough.

Stickers Coming Soon to BBM

Hot on the heels of the latest BBM release, we’re excited to announce that there are even more great new features on their way to BBM. This time, they are focused on making your BBM chats more fun with the addition of stickers, available in the new BBM Shop!

Unlike emoticons, stickers are bolder, more beautiful images that you can add right in to your chat. Stickers are downloaded in packs available for purchase from the new BBM Shop – found right inside BBM. Each sticker pack will contain between 20-25 stickers relating to a theme or a character like CosCat, Gilbert’s Tales, Bubble Bot and more (we can’t wait for you to meet the whole gang!). You’ll also find some of your favorite characters from TV and movies in sticker form (more on that later). Lastly, many of your favorite BBM emoticons will also be available in a free BBM sticker pack so you can really get your point across in a bigger, bolder way!

Today marks the start of the limited external beta for stickers and the BBM Shop. I’m sure you have lots of questions about how stickers will work and when you can get them. Let me assure you that all your questions will be answered shortly

BBM Channels: Update of BlackBerry Messenger on BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry OS Devices

BBM Channels for BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry OS devices has officially launched! BBM Channels is a great way to have real conversations with people across the world, whether you’re engaging with others across a variety of BBM Channels or creating your own and connecting with new BBM Channels Contacts. To help you dive in, here’s an overview of a few things you’ll want to know. For example, you can create and manage a BBM Channel using the BBM Channels Manager website.

BBM Channels is not yet available to those using BBM on Android and iPhone devices, but you can still get started on the website if you have a confirmed BlackBerry ID email address!

What is BBM Channels, and how do I get it?
If you aren’t familiar with BBM Channels, it is a new feature that allows you to engage in conversations with other people, brands and communities. For example, I love Formula1, so I joined the Mercedes AMG Petronas BBM Channel to follow insider news from my favorite team. You can also make your own channel and take advantage of several unique features that make connecting with your subscribers really easy.

BBM Channels is available for BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry OS devices and can be found in BlackBerry World. If you already have BBM installed, upgrade by clicking here while using a BlackBerry device, or open BlackBerry World and select My World. You’ll be shown your application updates that will include a BBM update. After updating, look for the new channels option the next time you open BBM.

Find and participate in other BBM Channels
Provided you have the latest version of BBM, discovering new channels to join and participate in couldn’t be easier. All you need to do is open BBM and tap the menu icon in the bottom-left corner followed by selecting Channels. You’ll be shown a collection of featured channels and posts that might interest you, or you can search for other channels.

Tip: The blue check mark identifies channels with authoritative content from people, brands and services.(Picture below)

When you find a channel that you would like to join, tap on it and use the Preview feature to take a peek at what content can be found inside. If you like what you see, tap Join+ along the bottom of your screen. You can now comment on posts within the channel, chat with the channel owner, and invite your BBM contacts to a channel that you think they might like. To find out more about a channel, such as when the channel owner is available for chats or what the website is, tap on the channel’s display picture.

After joining a channel, you will receive notifications whenever something new is posted or when someone has replied to or liked one of your comments. To view your channel notifications, tap the icon in the bottom-left corner, followed tapping the globe icon along the top of your screen.

Creating a BBM Channel
After joining some channels, create your own so you can share your thoughts, ideas and more. Best of all, creating your own channel is absolutely free and you have complete control of how your subscribers can interact with you by specifying chat hours and restricting comments. You can make one on your device using the steps provided below or by using the BBM Channels Manager website found at http://us.blackberry.com/bbm/bbm-channels.html

For those using BBM for Android and iPhone, this is how you can create a channel and get started. Just make sure you confirm your BlackBerry ID email address. To do so, check out KB34137.

Note: Channels that you create are associated with your BlackBerry ID and cannot be transferred to another BlackBerry ID.

How to create a BBM Channel using BlackBerry 10
1. Open BBM and tap the icon in the bottom-left corner of your screen.
2. Select Channels followed by tapping the 3 dot icon in the bottom-right of your screen.
3. Select Create Channel and provide the following required information:
*. Channel display picture
*. Channel name
*. Channel category
4. In addition to the required fields, complete the optional fields if desired.
5.Tap Save After entering your channel details, make sure you customize your channel settings. To access these settings while viewing a channel you created, tap the 3 dot icon in the bottom-right of your screen and select Channel Settings. You’ll be able to customize the following options:
*. Allow BBM Chats with You – Optionally allow your subscribers to start a BBM chat with you, even if they’re not in your contact list
*. Chat Hours – If Allow BBM Chats with You is enabled, use this option to specify when you are available to chat
*. Allow Comments on Post – Optionally prevent subscribers from leaving comments on posts in your channel
*. Approve Comments – If enabled, comments are allowed but must be approved using the BBM Channels Manager website
*. Show Channel in Search – Optionally prevent others from finding your channel using the search feature
*. Show Channel Activity in Updates – If enabled, updates applicable to this channel will appear in your BBM updates listing.

Congratulations, you’ve created a channel! Now all that’s left to do is invite your BBM contacts and share your channel PIN and Barcode. To find your channel PIN and Barcode, just click on your channel’s current display picture.

Managing a BBM Channel
When you create a channel, you have two options when it comes to managing it. You can either use your device or the BBM Channels Manager, which is a browser-based management console.
*. To manage your channel using your device, all you need to do is open your channel. Here you can view your channel stats, reported items and engage in chats with your subscribers.
*. To manage your channel using the BBM Channels Manager, visit http://us.blackberry.com/bbm/bbm-channels.html and sign in using your BlackBerry ID. After logging in, you can start engaging with your subscribers, review your stats, manage pending comments if Approve Comments is enabled, and much more.

Instagram comes to BlackBerry via iGrann and BlackGram

After months of having to go through the “pain” (I exaggerate obviously) of side loading the android port of instagram, today you have not one but two options to get instagram running natively on your BlackBerry 10 device.

BlackGram is built from the ground up as a native BlackBerry 10 app and uses cloud servers much like instance on Windows Phone to bring you full access to instagram’s service.

BlackGam’s features include:
*.Account creation
*.Profile picture change
*.Full browsing: followers, following, liked.
*.Search users and tags
*.Like, unlike, comment, follow and unfollow
*.Select a picture from your albums or take a photo with the camera
*.Edit the image with the integrated editor and native filters
*.Original Instagram filters (server-side) iGrann is also a native BlackBerry 10 app but unlike BlackGram, it gain’s access to the instagram service by reverse engineering one of the services APIs.

iGrann also integrates deeply with BlackBerry 10 giving you access to some of the BlackBerry’s native features from within the app.

With iGrann you can:
*.Register an account
*.Browse your feed
*.Browse Photos & Videos
*.Upload Photos
*.Apply native filters to photos
*.Apply native frames to photos
*.Like and Unlike Photos & Videos
*.Comment Photos & Videos
*.Explore Popular Photos & Videos
*.Browse Profiles
*.Follow and Unfollow Users
*.Search Users
*.Search Hashtags
*.View News
*.ReGrann Photos
*.Share Photos
*.And much much more…What you can not currently do with iGrann, but will be implemented in a future release:
*.Upload Videos
*.Receive notifications Because its server-based, BlackGram is a paid app, to keep up with server costs, it also means there is a slight delay when you post pictures using instagram filters because they have to be processed server side.

iGrann on the other hand is free but as of right now, is only available as a limited public beta with a few features like profiles disabled while the kinks are being worked out.

If you want to try them out, you will find BlackGram on BlackBerry World for $3.99 and you can download the iGrann beta for side load here. (here is how to side load just in case you are lost). While you at it, you should follow Jeffbankstegrity on Instagram for some cool stuff.

Update: The BlackGram developers have apparently disabled downloads right now, and are upgrading their servers to cope with the huge number of requests they have gotten in the past few hours. It should be available for download again soon.

BlackBerry 10.2 OS and How to Update

instant previews

We’ve got some exciting news for BlackBerry 10 customers out there— your favourite smartphone is getting even better with the release of BlackBerry 10.2 OS, which will available for download starting this week.

BlackBerry 10.2 OS introduces new features like BlackBerry Priority Hub, BlackBerry Natural Sound, and BBM now in any app that will help you be more productive and stay better connected when it counts. Plus, with hundreds of new refinements, BlackBerry 10.2 makes the things you do every day faster and easier. Here are just some of the new features you’re going to love in BlackBerry 10.2:

BlackBerry 10.2 Highlights:

Priority Hub

Keep your important conversations closer than ever with the new Priority Hub. Always at your fingertips, Priority Hub learns what conversations are most important to you and automatically puts those messages at the top of your inbox, helping you to stay focused on the critical items. On top of that, the new attachment view helps you organise files and documents across your messaging accounts and within specific message threads.

BBM Video with Natural Sound

BBM Video has always allowed you to have a live face-to-face conversation with anyone, anywhere. Now, with Natural Sound, BBM Video and Voice conversations between BlackBerry 10 smartphones sound more natural and realistic. It’s the next best thing to being in the same room. We’re able to accomplish this because BlackBerry Natural Sound captures a wider sound spectrum, so you can hear subtle nuances that are lost in most cellular calls.

Instant Previews of BBM, SMS and Email from any app

Stay in the flow. BBM, SMS and E-mail messages now find you no matter what you are doing on your BlackBerry. See email, BBM and SMS message previews appear in any app – you can even respond to your BBM or SMS messages in any app or go to the BlackBerry Hub with a single swipe to respond to your email. Perfect for keeping the conversation going while you browse the web, watch a video, or use other apps. Of course, you can tailor these notifications to the way you work to ensure you’re only notified as much as you want to be.

BlackBerry Keyboard

The smartphone keyboard that knows your next move just got even smarter. With personalized next word suggestion, auto-correction, and the distinctive BlackBerry keyboard layout, we’ve built this keyboard to help you have conversations with speed and accuracy. And on the BlackBerry Z10 and BlackBerry Z30, improved audio feedback with distinct tones for specific keys like backspace, and shift helps you type more confidently because you’ll have more reassurance you’ve hit the right key.

Copy and Paste Enhancements

Copy and paste just got easier. Not only does BlackBerry 10.2 offer more precise cursor control, text selection is now easier. Once you select text, a pop up menu gives you editing options and direct sharing with BBM, Facebook and Twitter – so you can quickly copy, paste and share

Faster, Easier Sharing

faster and easier sharing

BlackBerry 10.2 learns how you share and who you share with, helping you reduce the number of steps and amount of time it takes to get your files, photos, or documents to where they need to go. Touching “share” in any app provides suggestions on who and how to share your files based on how you’ve shared in the past, and the feature only gets smarter the more you use it.

Lock Screen Notifications

lock screen notification

When the red light on your BlackBerry 10 smartphone is flashing, you don’t have to unlock the phone to see your message. Notifications on the lock screen now let you take a peek at the latest email, text, BBM, or notification to see if that’s the message you’ve been waiting for or one that can wait a while. You can customize which accounts appear on the lock screen and scroll over the icons to display the sender and subject line.

Reply Now

Reply Now lets you respond to incoming phone calls, even when it’s not a good time to answer the phone. Easily send a response through BBM, SMS or email – choose from a list of standard automated responses or respond with a personalized note. Perfect for ensuring that important contacts are always given your attention.

Calendar Enhancements

BlackBerry Calendar now comes with an ‘I’m running late’ function so you can instantly let meeting participants know if you’ll be late. You can even specify a new time in your notification. And, with a redesigned interface that makes adding an event easier, managing your time is simple.

BlackBerry 10.2 OS gives you a lot of new reasons to love your BlackBerry 10 smartphone, and we haven’t even mentioned the updates to Docs to Go, a new BlackBerry Hub icon, camera enhancements—but the best way to experience all BlackBerry 10.2 has to offer is to try it for yourself. Remember to back up before updating.

BlackBerry OS 10.2 is expected to start rolling out in the following regions pending carrier availability:

  • Africa: Starting this week
  • Asia Pacific: Starting this week
  • Canada: Starting this week
  • Europe: Starting this week
  • Latin America: Starting in November
  • Middle East: Starting this week
  • US: Starting this winter

How to update to BlackBerry v10.2

When the update becomes available on your carrier, here’s how you can update for free:

Download: BlackBerry Messenger Relaunched on Android and iPhone

We said it was coming in a few days, and now it is here! Exactly a month after the botched roll out attempt, BlackBerry has let us know that the app would start rolling out to all users in a few hours on both app stores.

BBM

To forestall against any issues like the last attempt, BlackBerry would be using a queue system to activate users, so to get it running, here is what you should do:
1. Download BBM – the easiest way is to visit BBM.com from your Android or iPhone browser.
2. Once the App is installed, open it, and enter your email address to hold your spot in line.
3. We will email you as soon as you reach the front of the line and can start using BBM

If you are among the millions that took the time to sign up at BBM.com, you can start using BBM immediately without waiting in line. If you didn’t sign up in advance, don’t worry – we are focused on moving millions of customers through the line as fast as possible.

Fairfax Group gives BlackBerry $4.7 Billion Buyout Offer

BlackBerry hasn't had a great run in the recent times and the company has been losing ground rather quickly. The last few quarters have been rough for the once dominant Canadian tech company, and depleting market share has resulted in its Board of Directors deciding to sell the company.

Ever since then, the company's board has been pushing for a quick sale before the end of the year, and it looks like the firm has struck a deal with a consortium led by Fairfax Financial Holdings Ltd. The deal totals some $4.8 billion with each share valued at $9.

BlackBerry, the company known for manufacturing smartphones for professionals has given the group a time frame of six weeks to conduct due diligence and if things go alright, the final agreement is expected to be signed on November 4.

In the meantime, BlackBerry will continue to look for alternative offers, but according to the intent agreement, Fairfax group will have all the rights to match the offers if any.

The Fairfax group, which currently owns a 10% stake in the company, has several partners who have opted to remain anonymous until the diligence is completed. Fairfax CEO Prem Watsa said that there are no strategic players or other technology firms in the consortium.

Update: BlackBerry Messenger Launch for Android and iPhone

After a long period, BlackBerry finally decided to release BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) on the iPhone and Android platforms. The dates were set; September 21 for the Android version and September 22 for the iPhone version. And when it was time, they dropped the app.

The first drama arrived in the form of September 21 coming and going with no sign of the Android version. Thankfully, the company kept their word and released the iPhone version on September 22 but the Android version was still not available despite the fact that it had a one day advantage. And finally, the company pulled even the iPhone version from the App Store.

According to their blog, an unreleased version of BBM for Android was leaked online, which saw over 1.1 million people using it in the first 8 hours. This version apparently had issues, so BlackBerry had to stop the launch of the legit versions for whatever reasons so that they could sort the issues with the leaked version, which doesn’t really make much sense.

Anyhow, BlackBerry is still working on releasing both versions of the app once again but hasn’t given any dates this time. Those who downloaded the iPhone version can apparently use it again after a short period of the service being down. We’ll let you know when the app hits the respective stores properly again. Until then, try and stay away from all the fakes that are floating around, especially on the Play Store.

BBM for Android Not Available in Google Play Store while BBM for iPhone is Available for Download in Apple iTunes

This post is for those that have been patiently waiting for the BBM for Android which ought to have been on Google Play Store since yesterday (Saturday) 12noon Nigerian time.

However allegedly due to some issues with the Android version which includes server problems, fake BBM names and apks surfacing on the Google Play Store, the BBM for Android suffered a major setback which will be worked on soonest as expected.

It would be important to note that the iPhone version of the BBM app is already making its way into all Apple App Stores worldwide.

It was first seen in Apple App World Australia and then move to other countries App Store and it's already available in India. Apparently in no time, it should be released worldwide by today Nigerian time.

Still, no sign of the Android version of BBM...whew! Even the leaked version is having a hard time displaying PINS and logging in people. This may be due to server overload.

Anyway, you guys should hang in there; surely it will make its way to Google Play Store for download and as always will be on the lookout and notify you guys when it finally hits the Play Store.

If you are an iPhone user, you can download your BBM for Iphone: Here

BlackBerry Messenger for Android & iPhone Unsupported Operating System

It is no longer news that BlackBerry is releasing the BlackBerry Messenger to other platforms before September. This was further reassured by Thorsten Heins at the BBLive conference
this morning.

According to Thorsten Heins, BBM would be free of charge to download and use. However, only the messaging and group chat would be rolled put first, followed by BBM Voice, Screen Sharing, Video Capabilities and BBM channels later in the year.

While a lot of folks are very much excited about this soon to be released BBM for Android and iOS, it is important to note that some devices are not supported.

Below are the devices it won't support
1. Any Android device running Android version lower than Ice Cream Sandwich i.e. Anything less than Android 4.0 won't be supported.
2. Any iOS device running less than iOS 6.0 won't be supported. I.e. Any iPhone lower than iPhone 3GS won't be supported, iPhone 4 still running iOS 5.1.1 won't be supported. Same goes for the iPads running
less than iOS 6.
3. Windows Phone 8 devices are not supported at all.

What does this mean?
It simply means that if you are very excited about this move and want to use BBM on your Android or Apple device, you should also make sure that your mobile device meets the requirements to download and use the soon to be released BBM for Android and iOS.

MTN BlackBerry Complete Now N800 till 17th July 2013

MTN sent a message to my friend and it goes like this;

"Yello Surprise! Activate Blackberry monthly or weekly service and get 20% discount instantly. Offer valid till July 17th".

Note: This is just a bonanza that will expire by July 17th 2013.

In other words, it means that you can now activate BBC one month plan for #800 instead of #1000. Very soon, we will get another text “That you can now activate BIS for N200”

I was just wondering what telecommunication will become by the year 2014, because I don’t really know what MTN Nigeria is up to; but I still stick to my dream that Blackberry Internet Subscription will still become N100 for a complete month.

Earlier this year, MTN and Etisalat reduced their Blackberry subscription price to #1,000 and #1,500 respectively.

So if your Blackberry subscription expires within this period, count yourself lucky to opt into this bonanza scheme.

To Activate This Plan Just load your MTN line with #800 & Send BBC to 21600 and you are good to go.

Enjoy this offer while it last.
