Respected constitutional lawyer, Itse Sagay (SAN), on Monday categorically stated that President Goodluck Jonathan is the real brain behind the deadly political crisis that is shaking Rivers State to its foundation.
While lamenting the dangerous trends, he said it is now clear from available evidence that the president is bent on forcing the state governor, Rotimi Amaechi, to either bow to his wishes or be completely neutralised. This action, according to him, is undemocratic and extremely dangerous.
The situation is not in anybody's hands, it is in the President's hands. He is the one behind the whole thing and there is no question about that. The Police Commissioner in Rivers State, Mbu, cannot be acting on his own. Definitely, he is taking instructions.
Prof Sagay insisted the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State ,Joseph Mbu, who led a team of policemen to disrupt a peaceful rally where a serving senator, Magnus Abe, was shot, is acting on instructions from above. That, according to him, explains why the police boss has not been called to order.
In his words: The way I see it, unless there is a dramatic change of mind from the President that Amaechi, as an elected governor, can have his own mind, have his own political leanings and that he cannot be battered and forced into accepting the president's plans, if the president can develop this state of mind and leave Amaechi alone, that is the way there can be peace.
The mindset of the President now is that the governor should be forced into accepting his own way or be completely neutralised. Those are the two extreme measures being taken by the President and they are very undemocratic and extremely dangerous, he said.
