This is to inform all the newly admitted students of The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) that the school management has released the payment procedure for acceptance, main school fees and accommodation (Hostel) fees for the 2013/2014 session. Candidates who have been offered provisional admission into the Institution are to pay the required acceptance fee and other listed fees.
Payment procedure for 2013/2014 OAU Acceptance, School Fees & Hostel Fee
All newly admitted students of Obafemi Awolowo University are expected to make payments via the O.A.U PORTAL by clicking on “PAYMENT OF FEES” from student’s Home Page to download PAYMENT SLIP for each type of payments you want to make (i.e. separate PAYMENT SLIP for Acceptance, Main School Fees and Accommodation) (optional).
The University PORTAL will determine the type of payments available for you. For example, if you are granted a BED SPACE, Accommodation fee will automatically appear on your screen.
WARNING: Do not pay for accommodation until you have secured a BED SPACE on the NET as such payment will not be refunded.
You are to present two(2) copies of the printed PAYMENT SLIP to any branch of the Bank you select on the School PORTAL for payment. It is expected that Bank will collect a copy while you keep a copy for yourself after stamping by Bank.
NOTE: NO PAYMENT WILL BE ACCEPTED IN ANY BRANCH OF BANKS IN OAU CAMPUS.

The State Commissioner for Education, Mrs Olayinka Oladunjoye, today announced that the State had commenced pilot teaching and learning of Chinese (Mandarin) Language in five Lagos State schools.
The schools who have started teaching this language are Bolade Junior Grammar School, Oshodi and Ikeja Junior Grammar School, Immaculate Heart Comprehensive Junior High School, Maryland/Mende Junior High School and New Era Junior Girls School, Surulere.
Despite assurances as to adequate security given by the management of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Borno, the exams could not hold.
The Zonal Coordinator of JAMB in the state, Ahmed Ali, had made attempts to reassure the candidates on their safety during the exam as he stated that they would all be protected.
It seems however that the reassurances were made in futility as the registrar of the exam body, Dibu Ojerinde has stated that the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination could not hold in Maiduguri, the state capital.
Professor Ojerinde made the disclosure while monitoring the conduct of the UTME in Abuja yesterday.

The board conducted its Dual-Based Test and Paper Pencil Test on Saturday with no fewer than 1,015,504 candidates writing the examination. The tests qualify the candidates for admission to the nation’s universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
Another batch of 616,574 candidates from May 17, 2014, will write the Computer-Based Test.
The board had last Tuesday assured that it had made adequate arrangements to ensure a hitch-free conduct of the UMTE in all the states, including Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.
But speaking on Saturday, Ojerinde said, “JAMB candidates who were supposed to go to Maiduguri to write their exams have decided to stay at home. There are about 400 of them. We have told them we will cater for them. They are afraid of what will happen to them.”
Ojerinde said the affected candidates would sit for CBT instead of the PPT that they initially applied to write.
The Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education, John Nwaobiala, who also spoke on the occasion, debunked reports that UTME candidates were among those attacked in Maiduguri.
He said, “There were some challenges that came up and the feeling was that since there were disturbances in that area, it might affect students movement.“
"What we are doing now is to ensure we have an opportunity. The CBT is coming up so they will have the opportunity to write the examination. There will be no disenfranchisement of the candidate.”
At 23, many people around the world are still at university — at that age, Gossy Ukanwoke had already started one.
The young entrepreneur is the founder of Beni American University (BAU), Nigeria’s first private online university. Launched in late 2012, the school allows students to access their classes at any time of the day with any internet-enabled device.
“We are providing executive programs for graduates who are looking for employment and want to build up their resumes, or managers who want to climb up the hierarchy of their companies,” says Ukanwoke, now 25.
We also have courses targeted at people who want to start their own business.”
‘Nigeria’s Mark Zuckerberg’
Ukanwoke’s idea to start BAU came from his previous online venture called Students Circle, an educational social networking site he’d launched while in university that allows learners to interact and access free resources from leading schools.
“When I created Students Circle in 2010,” explains Ukanwoke, “I found out that … many were looking for certificates, hoping that they could get something they could use to maybe find employment or get a promotion in the workplace.
“There was a need for a new institution to be created in Nigeria,” adds Ukanwoke, who was once described by Forbes as “Nigeria’s Mark Zuckerberg.”
Now, some 18 months into his new business endeavor, Ukanwoke has hired 10 instructors and has about 200 students, with an average age of 26.
But the startup’s journey so far has not been without challenges — Nigerian laws require universities to have a physical campus so last year Ukanwoke went and bought land in the country’s Benue State with the goal to build a private campus that could accommodate some 10,000 students.
Education is about teaching people how to make a living and teaching people how to live.
Gossy Ukanwoke, Beni American University the project is expected to launch next year, but in the meantime the web courses are up and running — a 12 week online program can cost between $100 and $300. Among the courses offered are corporate diplomacy, global marketing, leadership and management, digital journalism, project management and entrepreneurship and innovation, which is the university’s most popular class.
“It’s good because I have four kids,” says Chinenye Madukwe, one of BAU’s students. “I have opportunity to work at the same time, because I have a small interior design outfit.
”Oo Nwoye, another BAU student, says he enrolled “for the knowledge.”
“It is just helpful for my business and that is the most important thing to me,” he explains.
Education is key
A son of two teachers, Ukanwoke says he is driven by his passion to use technology to solve social problems.
“I grew up within the framework where education was put at a very high level of importance, and entrepreneurship is something that I always wanted to do,” he says.
“Without education I don’t think we can do any progress,” he adds. “It’s not just about getting a certificate — education is about teaching people how to make a living and teaching people how to live; how to interact with others, how to lead their lives and make something out of themselves,” continues Ukanwoke.
“With education comes discipline and we need a lot of discipline in Nigeria as well, so education is really important.”
Ukanwoke relies mainly on social media to advertise but says that it’s student referrals that are increasing BAU’s enrollment.
“We still have a long way to go, we have a lot of work to do, a lot of policy wrangling too,” he admits. “But it’s a work in progress and we are quite happy with where we are.”
Students of Covenant University based in Ota, Ogun State, have been banned from using or being in possession of gadgets such as SIM enabled tablets and more.
The school which is being run under strict disciplinary rules is known for its low tolerance any form of misconduct among its students.
The school made the latest announcement few days ago placing a ban on the use of “phone chargers, SIM Cards, and SIM enabled devices [like] iPad, Techno,Samsung and other unpopular tab brands” in the school.
According to the release signed by the institution's Dean of Student Affairs, Mr. Azubuike, any student found with these prohibited materials will be punished with a 4-week suspension.

The recent screening of new intakes for the Lagos State University (LASU) Ojo was hit by a rather low number of students.
Even though Tuesday's turnout was a lot higher than Monday's, it was still low in comparison with what was experienced in previous years.
The Dean of Student Affairs, LASU, Prof. Kabir Akinyemi, however, said that there was hope that the turnout would continue to improve in subsequent days.
Asked if the high school fees could be discouraging some students, Akinyemi said short-listed students were already aware of the fees. “There would be an impressive and better turnout subsequently, since the exercise is still in progress,” he said.
Akinyemi urged prospective students to show up for the exercise and shun deliberate absenteeism. “In the event of some students missing the exercise, the university management may have to decide on an avenue to re-screen those with genuine reasons before the matriculation on March 28.”
The professor said that candidates who did not meet the specified requirements for admission would be screened out during the exercise. “It is not possible for LASU to admit any student who is unqualified because they need students.
“Any student who does not meet up with the requirement would either have to change the course to that which is suitable, or would be denied the admission,” the dean said. He advised the students to be of good conduct during the exercise and beyond.
Lecturers at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have been barred from selling handouts to students.
The measure is to curb the practice where lecturers give out “ill-prepared pamphlets and booklets” which in the end discourage students from taking interest in personal research.
“If we are not careful, lecturers will offer incomplete handouts that have not been peer reviewed or evaluated by others in the academia”, a research fellow of the university, Dr Albert Amoah Saah, stated.
Speaking on the fourth day of the 65th New Year School symposium at the University of Ghana on Wednesday, Dr Saah stated “If students use only handouts for studies, it discourages creative learning to enable them to expand their knowledge”.
“KNUST has instructed its lecturers to rather guide students to look out for Internet addresses that enable students to obtain learning materials on their own”, he stated.
Dr Saah was presenting a paper on the topic: “ICT and distance education: Challenging the status quo and defining new areas; a case study of KNUST”.
The four-day event is being held on the theme: “Information and Communication Technology-driven education for sustainable human development: Challenges and prospects”.
Handouts discourage research Dr Saah stated that the practice of some lecturers downloading learning materials from the Internet and selling them out to students did not serve the interest of the students.
“When lecturers give students handouts, such practice has the tendency to cripple the enthusiasm of students to do their own research work”, he explained.
He added that many lecturers often made a lot of money out of selling handouts and “students always believe that once they study such handouts they have a better chance to pass exams”.
“KNUST is encouraging lecturers to put their own research work into books and make them available in bookshops and publish them on websites”, he added.
Handouts are taboos
The President of the Accra Institute of Technology (AiT), Professor Clement Dzidonu, described the practice of teachers selling handouts at AiT as a “taboo”.
“Handouts confine students, and we have warned our teachers to desist from the practice”, he stated.
To address the challenge, he stated, the AiT encouraged its lecturers to resort to the use of e-learning to enhance teaching and learning.
